Membership Requirements

Applicants must possess sufficient physical and mental health to perform any and all duties required by the department.

Must be at least 19 years of age.

Must have a valid Nebraska drivers license.

Cannot have a felony conviction.

Applicants must live in the Ashland Fire District, work in the Ashland Fire District, or live immediately near the Ashland Fire District.
How to Apply

Fill out both the AVFD Application and the AVFD Background Check Release Form completely. The forms can be completed online then printed or printed first and then completed.

Be sure to sign and date both forms.

Deliver both forms to City Hall during regular business hours (Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm). City Hall is located at 2304 Silver Street, Ashland, NE 68003, phone (402) 944-3387.

If you pass the background check, your application will be sent to the Ashland Fire Chief and you will be contacted by an Ashland Fire Department Representative.​

You will be asked to attend the next Fire Department monthly meeting for an interview with the Fire Department Officers.
New Members

New members will have one year to complete a CPR course, a First Aid course and either complete or be enrolled in a Firefighter I course.

The Firefighter I course is an 118 hour long course.

The training will be at no cost to new members.

Firefighter courses are typically one or two nights per week depending on how the course is set up. The overall length of the course is determined by how many hours the class is scheduled per week.

An online course has been developed, with a practical skills testing sessions at the end of each section.

Once accepted, members are required to stay active which includes participate in emergency responses, training, maintenance sessions, and department functions to remain active.
